Security of Schueco uPVC windows and doors

Steel-reinforced frames, mushroom-head locking all round the sash and safety glass take CT 70 windows and doors to RC 2. The same hardware lets a window ventilate while it stays locked.

What makes a window hard to force

Burglars attack the gap between sash and frame. A window resists if the sash can't be levered out at any point along its edge, and if the glass can't simply be broken through. CT 70 handles both.

  • Mushroom-head locking cams. VarioTec hardware drives steel cams around the sash. Their mushroom heads hook behind steel keepers, so the sash can't be levered away from the frame.
  • Locking points no more than 800 mm apart. Schueco's fabrication rules cap the spacing, so long sashes get more locking points.
  • Steel in frame and sash. Galvanised steel reinforcement, 1.5 to 2.5 mm wall thickness, gives the screws for keepers and hinges something solid to hold.
  • 13 mm hardware axis. The CT 70 profile is designed to take Schueco's anti-burglary fittings.
  • Safety glass. RC 2 needs additional safety glass. Without it, the hardware alone doesn't carry the rating.
  • Lockable handles. Available on windows, so the sash can't be opened from outside through broken glass.

Ventilation that stays locked

The tilt position is for airflow while someone is home. For a locked vent, VarioTec has a parallel position: the whole sash moves in by about 6 mm, all round, and the window keeps its RC 2 rating. That suits bedrooms at night, ground-floor rooms and apartments where a tilted sash isn't wanted.

Tilt-before-turn hardware is the other option. The first handle position tilts the sash and the second turns it, so the everyday movement is the safer one.

Entrance doors

Multi-point locking on CT 70 entrance doors

CT 70 entrance doors use Schueco MultiTec door hardware with up to 5-point locking, and the frame and sash are reinforced all round. Lock options include:

  • Swing-bolt lock, tested to RC 2, with hooks top and bottom as well as the centre bolt
  • Self-locking lock: the locking points engage by themselves when the door closes
  • Motorised lock, which can be paired with a fingerprint reader for keyless entry
  • Security handle sets that help the door reach RC 2
  • Schueco BlueCon i: Bluetooth access by phone app, with permanent, recurring or time-limited access and an activity log

Glass

Safety glass does two jobs

In Australia, AS 1288 sets where glass has to be safety glass because people might walk into it: doors, low glazing, glass near doors and wet areas. Separately, the RC 2 rating needs safety glass to resist a break-in. Laminated glass covers both, and it also helps acoustics. We mark the safety glass openings on your schedule when we quote.

Toughened

Breaks into small pieces. Meets human-impact requirements, but once broken the opening is clear.

Laminated

Panes bonded by an interlayer that holds the glass in place when it breaks. The usual choice for security and acoustic units.

Smart sensors

Schueco's wireless window sensor fits in the frame rebate of CT 70 windows and EasySlide doors. It reports open or closed over Matter, runs on two AAA batteries and sounds a built-in alarm if it detects a break-in attempt.

Fall protection

Barriers for floor-to-ceiling windows

Schueco makes fall protection barriers that mount directly on CT 70 windows: frameless glass panels 10 to 16 mm thick, or horizontal stainless steel bars, or the two combined. They let you put a full-height opening sash on an upper floor without a separate balustrade.

These barriers are tested to German standards. The NCC has its own rules for barriers and for openable windows in bedrooms above a set floor height, so check the NCC requirements for each project with your certifier. Where a barrier isn't the answer, we can supply restrictors or tilt-before-turn hardware on the affected openings.

FAQ

Questions from builders and architects

What is RC 2?

RC 2 is a burglary resistance class under the European standard EN 1627. A window or door in RC 2 has been tested against an opportunist using simple tools such as screwdrivers and wedges. Schueco CT 70 windows and doors and EasySlide lift and slide doors reach RC 2 when fitted with safety glass and the matching hardware.

Is a window still secure in the vent position?

With Schueco VarioTec hardware, the parallel vent position moves the whole sash in by about 6 mm, and the window stays at RC 2 in that position. The normal tilt position is for ventilation when someone is home.

What locks do CT 70 entrance doors use?

Schueco MultiTec door hardware with up to 5-point locking. Options include a swing-bolt lock tested to RC 2, a self-locking lock that engages as soon as the door closes, and a motorised lock that can work with a fingerprint reader. BlueCon i adds Bluetooth access from a phone.

Do sliding doors reach RC 2?

EasySlide lift and slide doors reach RC 2 with safety glass. Schueco doesn't give an RC class for SoftSlide, which has an anti-lift gearbox. Where security is in the brief for a large opening, specify EasySlide.

Do Schueco fall protection barriers meet the NCC?

Schueco's glass and bar barriers are tested to German standards. Australian requirements for barriers and for openable windows in bedrooms depend on the floor height and the room, so check the NCC requirements for each project with your certifier. We'll specify restrictors, tilt-before-turn hardware or barriers to suit.
